they say that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny but it's more a reflection than a recapitulation. as above, so below. the microcosm reflects the macrocosm, and vice versa. all reflections translate and distort, but there is fractal similarity between various scales. evolution wants to ascend- to the next order of magnitude in scale. intelligence wants to add links; empathy & understanding comes from consideration of divergent data.

exegesis:
evolutionary aspiration is sometimes seen as an upward movement through levels, from earth to sky, hell to heaven or from the base of the spinal column to the brain. it is also a movement outward from the micro to the macro, from simple molecular machines to human and planetary systems. there is also a movement of information integration, from simple understanding to complex synthesis of multiple knowledge streams- from simple parts to complex systems. in reality, these movements can go in both directions: up and down, in and out, simple to complex, complex to simple.
there is no reason why the human (or the hypothetical extraterrestrial being) has to be the pinnacle of organization. the Gaia Hypothesis has yet to be disproven, and, in this essay i will discuss the Lactea Hypothesis...
